I found a very interesting rock and I think it may be a meteorite. How can I find out for sure?
You can mail a small sample of your specimen to us and we can conduct the necessary tests to find out if it is a meteorite.
If we believe your specimen is a meteorite, we will have our lab perform a variety of tests to determine its composition and classification. We will provide you with information about your specimen after analysis, including our determination regarding whether or not it is a meteorite.
How long does it take to determine whether my rock is a meteorite?
We received hundreds of suspected meteorites every year. We look at each one individually to determine whether the specimen may be a meteorite. Some are easily identified as terrestrial material. Others require further scientific examination.
Depending on the number of specimens we have in our lab at one time, it may take from two weeks to three months to determine whether or not your specimen is a meteorite. We always appreciate your patience.
How much does it cost to have my specimen analyzed?
In order to cover the expenses involved in the analysis of the hundreds of specimens we receive each year, there is a nominal charge of $100.00. If you would like us to return your specimen to you when our analysis is complete, also include sufficient return postage and insurance.
I have a suspected meteorite. Where should I send it?
